Trump Names Inexperienced Ally as Intelligence Director

President Donald Trump has appointed Bill Pulte, a staunch loyalist lacking national security experience, to lead U.S. intelligence as the acting director of national intelligence (DNI). Pulte, who currently serves as the chief of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), will also continue in his existing roles overseeing federal housing and mortgage policies.

The appointment replaces Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned in late May. Gabbard's tenure was marked by apparent disagreements with Trump regarding his policy towards Iran. The DNI position is crucial, heading the U.S. intelligence community and serving as the president's principal advisor on intelligence matters. However, federal law mandates that the DNI possess "extensive national security expertise," a qualification Pulte does not meet.

Trump announced the appointment via social media, praising Pulte's "deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets." Pulte, 38, has been publicly critical of Trump's political opponents. U.S. media has described him as the president's "attack dog," citing instances where he accused Democratic officials, including Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James, of falsifying documents. A federal grand jury had indicted James in October, but the case was later dismissed.

Pulte has also been involved in a mortgage fraud case against Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, which Trump used in an attempt to remove her from her position. That case remains pending before the Supreme Court. Pulte's appointment to lead intelligence, despite his lack of relevant experience and his history of public attacks on political adversaries, is likely to draw significant attention and potential challenges.
