Trump nominates lawyer Keith Noreika as U.S. ambassador to Lithuania

President Donald Trump has put forward Keith Noreika, a lawyer specializing in financial management, as his nominee for the next U.S. ambassador to Lithuania. The White House announced this nomination, along with others for ambassadorial and various positions, which will now be subject to Senate approval.

Noreika brings a wealth of experience in the financial sector. He currently holds the position of executive vice president at "Patomak Global Partners" and also chairs the Banking Supervision and Regulation Group. Previously, in 2017, he served for six months as the head of the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, overseeing all federal banks in the country. His background also includes leading financial institutions' regulatory practice at the law firm "Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP."

Should the Senate confirm his nomination, Noreika would mark a departure from Lithuania's diplomatic history with the United States. Since 1991, all eleven individuals who have served as U.S. ambassadors to Lithuania have been career diplomats. Noreika's appointment would therefore break this long-standing tradition. The current U.S. envoy to Lithuania, Kara C. McDonald, is a career diplomat who began her assignment in late 2023.

The practice of appointing non-career diplomats to ambassadorships is not unprecedented under the Trump administration. Earlier this year, Melissa Argyros was appointed U.S. ambassador to Latvia, reportedly without prior diplomatic experience but having contributed significantly to the current president's election campaign. Similarly, Kimberly Guilfoyle, a lawyer and former "Fox News" host, was appointed to lead the U.S. Embassy in Greece in late 2024; she was previously reported to have dated Trump's eldest son.
