Trump Offers Mediation in Ukraine War After Calls with Putin and Zelenskyy

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has offered to mediate an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, following separate phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Kremlin announced that Trump expressed his readiness to work towards a swift cessation of hostilities during a nearly 90-minute conversation with Putin.

On the Ukrainian side, President Zelenskyy described his July 4th conversation with Trump as "very good." He appealed to American determination to end the war, stating, "There is a real prospect of ending this war, and American resolve will be crucial." Both leaders reportedly agreed to continue their discussions at an upcoming NATO summit in Turkey. As a symbolic gesture, Kyiv illuminated the Motherland Monument in the colors of the U.S. flag.

According to Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov, Russia seeks a political-diplomatic solution that considers its core positions, accusing Kyiv and its allies of escalating the conflict. Ushakov claimed Putin outlined the current battlefield situation, asserting that Russian forces are advancing confidently. He also mentioned that Trump and Putin discussed other international issues, including Iran and the Gulf region.

However, Ukraine and independent observers have contested Russia's battlefield claims. While Russian military bloggers and the Russian Ministry of Defense have stated that the city of Kostyantynivka is under full Russian control, Ukrainian military blogs and the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) indicate that Russian forces occupy only parts of the city, interspersed with Ukrainian positions. The ISW suggests Putin's announcement may be an attempt to garner media attention ahead of the U.S. Independence Day celebrations.
