Trump orders 'drastic reduction' in South Korea joint military drills

Trump stated his dissatisfaction with the drills, noting their significant expense borne by the U.S. He acknowledged that canceling the exercises entirely was too late, thus opting for a substantial reduction. Historically, the suspension or scaling back of joint drills has been used as a condition for engaging with Pyongyang.

South Korea's presidential office expressed hope that the positive relationship between the leaders of North Korea and the U.S. would lead to meaningful dialogue, advancing peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. However, there is a palpable fear of "Korea passing," where Seoul could be sidelined in U.S.-North Korea interactions, leading to direct U.S.-North Korea dealings without South Korean involvement.

Trump also mentioned asking the South Korean president about joining Iran's denuclearization efforts, only to be reportedly declined, suggesting accumulated frustrations may be influencing his decisions regarding the drills.
