Trump Praises North Korea, Announces Cutback in South Korea Military Drills

President Donald Trump has ordered a significant reduction in U.S. participation in joint military exercises with South Korea, citing their high cost and potentially provocative nature towards North Korea. The announcement came via Trump's Truth Social account early Monday.

Trump asserted that the exercises are not only expensive, with the U.S. bearing a large portion of the costs, but also send an "inappropriate and hostile message" to a nation with which he claims to have a "harmonious and respectful" relationship under his presidency. He specifically referred to North Korea as this nation.

While the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, scheduled to begin Monday and last 11 days, cannot be canceled entirely, Trump has instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to substantially decrease U.S. involvement. These annual drills are designed to prepare allied forces for potential conflict with nuclear-armed North Korea, which often denounces them as a rehearsal for invasion.

Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with the U.S. agreeing to these joint exercises in the first place and criticized South Korea for not supporting the U.S. in the "war in Iran." He further justified his decision by referencing his "very good relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
