U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran, threatening "thousands of missiles" in direct response to open calls for his assassination during the funeral of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to voice his response after U.S. officials demanded Iran publicly commit to keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and cease attacking vessels transiting the vital corridor. Iran has thus far refused, asserting its control over the waterway and its right to target ships, a stance that significantly alters the decades-old status of the strait as a priority international shipping route.

The exchange of fire between the U.S. and Iran has intensified this week, following Iran's attack on three ships in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. airstrikes targeted Iran, which retaliated with actions directed at Middle Eastern nations. Trump appears to believe that threats can compel Iran to reach a final agreement regarding the strait. During Khamenei's funeral, some attendees displayed banners calling for Trump's death, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The U.S. administration is attempting to attribute the current crisis to an "out-of-control faction" within Iran's hardliners, aiming to sabotage a potential ceasefire between Tehran and Washington. However, Iran denies these claims, asserting the unity of its theocratic regime under new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, Ali Khamenei's son. Mojtaba's absence from his father's funeral, however, has cast doubt on these assertions. The U.S. administration maintains that Trump has a wide array of options available should Iran fail to comply with his short deadline given to negotiators.
