Trump's 'Golden Dome' Defense System Faces Scathing Report: $1.2 Trillion for a 'Parasol'?

Washington D.C. – A recent Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report has cast a harsh spotlight on Donald Trump's ambitious "Golden Dome" missile defense project, revealing potentially staggering costs and questionable effectiveness. The analysis, requested by Senator Jeff Merkley, suggests the system could become one of the most expensive defense disappointments in U.S. history.

The CBO's findings project a 20-year cost of $1.2 trillion for the Golden Dome's construction and operation, based on a January 2025 executive order. This figure dwarfs Donald Trump's original estimate of $175 billion and far surpasses the Pentagon's $17.5 billion request for the 2027 fiscal year. Even the program's chief, General Michael A. Guetlein, has publicly estimated the deployment cost at around $185 billion over a decade, a fraction of the CBO's calculation.

Beyond the immense financial burden, the report raises serious doubts about the system's strategic value. The Golden Dome, despite its projected cost, is unlikely to provide a comprehensive shield against major adversaries. Instead, it is described as offering at best a "parasol" – capable of deflecting limited threats, such as those posed by North Korea or minor salvos from Russia or China, but insufficient to counter a full-scale nuclear attack from either superpower.

The proposed architecture comprises four defensive layers. The most expensive is the space-based component, envisioned as a constellation of 7,800 satellites equipped with interceptor missiles, estimated to cost approximately $723 billion for procurement alone. Additional layers include ground-based interceptors like GBI, THAAD, Patriot PAC-3, and the Next Generation Interceptor (NGI), as well as naval assets such as Arleigh Burke-class destroyers armed with SM-3 and SM-6 missiles.
