Trump's helicopter had close call with commercial plane over Washington

The presidential helicopter Marine One, with then-U.S. President Donald Trump aboard, came within a mile of a commercial passenger plane in Washington's airspace on Tuesday. This close encounter has once again placed air safety around Ronald Reagan National Airport under scrutiny. The incident happened as the presidential aircraft was in the vicinity of the airport at the same time as a local airline Envoy flight, according to media reports. The proximity between the two aircraft triggered a review by aviation authorities to determine the circumstances of the encounter. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed a temporary reduction in separation between the aircraft while authorities analyze air traffic coordination in the area. This zone experiences a convergence of commercial flights, military aircraft, and presidential transport movements. The incident occurs in an area that has been the focus of special attention following previous air safety episodes around Reagan National Airport. The airport's location near downtown Washington and restricted airspace has made it a point of concern for security. This concern was heightened after a fatal crash in January 2025, when an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines passenger flight, resulting in the deaths of all 67 people on board both aircraft.
