Trump's influence wanes as endorsed candidates suffer key primary losses

Donald Trump, long known for his ability to anoint Republican candidates to victory, is facing a string of setbacks as his endorsed contenders falter in key primary elections. For nearly a decade, Trump has cultivated the image of a political kingmaker, with his backing often proving decisive for aspiring politicians within the Republican Party. This summer, however, that Midas touch appears to be fading.

Recent weeks have seen a notable pattern of losses for Trump-backed candidates. In Wyoming, a gubernatorial primary saw a Trump-endorsed candidate defeated. Similarly, on Florida, two congressional races resulted in losses for those who had received the former president's support. Reports indicate that only a low percentage of voters ultimately cast ballots for Trump's chosen individuals in these contests, a statistic commentators have deemed a significant blow to his influence.

One such race involved Catalina Lauf, a candidate associated with the "Make America Healthy Again" movement, who lost a bid for Congress in Florida despite Trump's endorsement. Another was Cory Mills, a congressman whose campaign for re-election was marred by investigations into his past conduct. Trump himself attempted to downplay these defeats, suggesting he had advised Mills to withdraw from the race. He quickly pivoted his support to Mills's victor, Ryan Elijah, praising him as a representative of "everything MAGA stands for."

These primary defeats extend beyond Florida. Andy Ogles, a congressman from Tennessee who faced criticism for anti-Muslim remarks, also saw his supported candidate lose. In Michigan, a congressional candidate endorsed by Trump also failed to secure a win. The trend is particularly stark in gubernatorial races, where five Trump-backed candidates have lost in recent months, indicating a broader challenge to his ability to shape the party's leadership at the state level.
