Trump’s pressure pays off as Lake Ontario disappears from Apple Maps

Donald Trump says Apple has completed the renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America, presenting the change as a victory after Google made the same adjustment in its U.S. applications.

Google changed the lake’s displayed name in its U.S. services in late August, citing the need to reflect official names used by governments in individual countries. For users connecting from outside the United States, Google places the new American name in parentheses alongside the original name. The company used a similar approach after Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico renamed the Gulf of America.

MapQuest said it would not rename the lake, although it allowed users to choose their own name as a joke. The State Department separately said it had “fixed the error” in the lake’s name on its websites.

Trump signed the renaming order as part of an ongoing trade dispute with Canada. Lake Ontario received its name in the 17th century, and leading theories trace it to a Huron word meaning “great lake.” The Canadian province of Ontario took the same name roughly 200 years later.
