Trump Says US Agrees to More Iran Talks, But Ceasefire is 'Over'

President Donald Trump stated on Friday that the United States has agreed to resume negotiations with Iran. However, he firmly reiterated that the ceasefire previously in place between the two nations has concluded.

"Iran has asked us to continue 'talks.' We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!" Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.

Earlier in the week, Trump had declared the April 8 ceasefire, which had temporarily halted weeks of intense warfare but was marred by ongoing lower-intensity conflict, to be finished. He referred to Iranian officials with strong derogatory language. At that time, the U.S. president also mentioned speaking with negotiator Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who have been involved in discussions with Iran, emphasizing that the onus was on Tehran to return to the negotiating table.

The announcement comes amid a period of heightened tensions, with both sides exchanging fire. Tehran has targeted commercial ships, prompting retaliatory strikes from Washington. Iran has also launched drone and missile attacks against U.S. assets in various Middle Eastern countries.
