Trump Signs Executive Order Establishing U.S. Space Academy

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order establishing the United States Space Academy, a new federal institution designed to train personnel in space technology and exploration. The move aims to strengthen NASA and enhance American capabilities in space amid increasing competition, particularly from China.

During a ceremony at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Trump announced the creation of the academy, stating, "Given the rapid growth of the Space Force and the commercial space industry, as well as our expanding ambitions for the Moon and beyond, it is clear that we will need to train an entire generation of skilled military personnel, engineers, and civilian operators."

The executive order tasks NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman with leading a committee to plan the academy's development. This committee will explore options, including potentially establishing the Space Academy under NASA's umbrella. The announcement comes as NASA faces proposed budget cuts for 2027, though the House of Representatives has indicated it may reject most of these reductions.

The U.S. Space Force, established by Trump in 2019 as the sixth branch of the armed forces, oversees satellites and analyzes potential space threats. The new academy is intended to serve both NASA and the Space Force, though its exact structure and responsibilities are still being defined. This initiative aligns with Trump's broader strategy to double the Space Force's budget and bolster U.S. military space systems to maintain an advantage over China in satellite dominance.
