Trump suggested that appointing Nordone would serve as a "fantastic tribute" to the senator, whom he described as a close friend and ally. Lindsey Graham died suddenly at age 71, creating a vacancy that Republicans are now scrambling to fill ahead of the November midterm elections. The late senator was a prominent figure and a key ally of Trump during his presidency.

South Carolina law dictates that the governor must appoint a temporary successor to fill a vacant federal Senate seat. This interim appointee will serve until a special election is held to select the Republican candidate who will then run in the upcoming general election. The winner of that election will serve the remainder of Graham's term, which concludes in January.
