Trump suggests renaming Lake Ontario amid trade spat with Canada

U.S. President Donald Trump has floated the idea of renaming Lake Ontario to "American Lake" amid escalating trade tensions with Canada. Trump announced the consideration on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating the U.S. is "seriously considering" the name change because "we don't expect to trade much with Ontario."

The provocative suggestion followed a sharp retort from Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Earlier, Ford had responded to new U.S. tariffs by telling the U.S. president to "kiss my ass." Ford also hinted at potential restrictions on electricity exports from Canada to the U.S. and limiting U.S. access to critical raw materials.

Ontario, Canada's most populous province, has an economy deeply intertwined with the U.S. Key exports include automobiles, auto parts, metals, and mineral products. The province also supplies electricity to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota. The dispute intensified significantly after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa collapsed late last week. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods over the weekend.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs. Trump, in turn, threatened to increase tariffs on Canadian cars, parts, and steel by up to 50% by the end of the year. This is not the first time Trump has sought to rename geographical features; last year, he signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to "American Gulf."
