Trump suspends Iran strikes, announces imminent deal

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has called off planned strikes against Iran, citing progress in peace talks. Trump stated that a deal is nearing completion and will be signed shortly.

"Given that the talks with the Islamic Republic of Iran have risen to the highest level of Iranian leadership and have been approved, I, as President of the United States of America, have canceled the air strikes and planned bombings against Iran for tonight," Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social.

He further elaborated that "the talks and final points have been approved, both conceptually and in detail, by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others!". However, Trump added that "the naval blockade will remain in full force and effect until this transaction is formalized; the time and place of the signing will be announced shortly."

The announcement came just hours after Trump had threatened Iran with further bombings and the seizure of its main oil terminals, following a night of retaliatory attacks between the two countries. The U.S. president had previously stated that the American military would strike Iran "VERY HARD TONIGHT" and warned of taking control of Iran's oil and gas markets, drawing parallels to actions taken in Venezuela.

Iran responded by stating that the United States risked becoming trapped in a quagmire for years if it continued its aggressions. The President of the Iranian Parliament and chief negotiator in peace talks with the United States, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned via X that "wrong strategies and impulsive decisions will ruin everything, cause the collapse of energy infrastructures and markets, and create an endless quagmire in which you will be trapped for years."
