Trump threatens EU with 'significant tariffs' over Google fines

President Donald Trump has escalated trade tensions with the European Union, threatening "significant tariffs" and initiating a formal investigation into the bloc's trade practices. This strong reaction stems from the European Commission's decision to impose a €890 million ($960 million) fine on Google for allegedly abusing its dominant market position.

The Commission found that Google favored its own services, such as Google Flights, in search results and restricted Android app developers' ability to advertise freely. Trump denounced the EU's move as illegal and highly unethical, stating that the bloc would pay a "heavy price" for its decision. This public confrontation highlights a growing friction between the U.S. and the EU over digital market regulation and trade policies.

The U.S. president's threat of tariffs followed closely on the heels of new U.S. import tariffs announced just hours earlier. While the EU had feared a much harsher response to the Google fine, the initial tariffs affect approximately 60 countries, representing 99.4% of U.S. imports. Nordic countries and other EU members will face a 10% tariff, while Norway, China, Japan, and Brazil will see a higher 12.5% import duty.

Norway's Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide criticized the decision, urging the U.S. to treat Norwegian products equally with other European goods. The Trump administration justified the new tariffs by citing alleged unfair trade practices and the use of forced labor in the manufacturing of goods imported into the United States.
