Trump wants to rename Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' amid trade row

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday his consideration of renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America," a move that escalates the ongoing trade dispute with Canada.

Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the United States is "seriously considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, given that we do not expect to do much business with Ontario anymore." This declaration came after Canada implemented retaliatory tariffs on various U.S. products, following the collapse of trade negotiations between the two nations.

This potential renaming echoes a similar action Trump took last year when he proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America." Trump shared a map on Truth Social where "Lake Ontario" was crossed out and replaced with "Lake America" in large, golden lettering, accompanied by an American flag.

The threat regarding Lake Ontario intensifies the trade war between the U.S. and Canada. It also appears to be linked to a personal dispute with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who recently dismissed Trump and threatened to impose surcharges on electricity exported from the Canadian province. Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, borders Canada and the U.S. state of New York, and is adjacent to Toronto, Canada's largest city.
