TSJE Reports Record Turnout in Municipal Internal Elections

Paraguay's Superior Electoral Justice Tribunal (TSJE) has announced a historic surge in voter participation for the recent internal municipal elections, signaling a strong engagement from citizens in the political process. The tribunal reported that turnout exceeded figures from the 2021 elections, underscoring a growing interest among party affiliates in shaping local leadership.

Minister César Rossel of the TSJE highlighted the significant increase in participation among the country's main political parties. The ruling National Republican Association (ANR) saw its turnout climb from 44% in 2021 to 50% in the latest elections. Similarly, the Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA) experienced a modest but notable rise, with participation increasing from 31.49% to 32.59%. Rossel expressed optimism, stating, "I believe we are on the right track. The Paraguayan people can be truly proud of the electoral system we have built together."

Rossel also lauded Paraguay's electoral system on a continental level, noting that international missions, including the Organization of American States (OAS) and the European Union, have recognized Paraguay as a leader in electoral matters. He specifically praised the Preliminary Electoral Results Transmission System (TREP) for its global reputation for speed and transparency. The TSJE minister assured the public that the institution is well-prepared for various scenarios and is resilient against destabilization attempts, emphasizing the robust checks and balances within the system.

Looking ahead to the general municipal elections in October, the TSJE is focused on further strengthening the electoral process. Rossel acknowledged that while the TSJE's system is highly regarded, some recommendations from bodies like the European Union pertain to constitutional or legal reforms that fall under the purview of Congress. The tribunal remains committed to ensuring a transparent and efficient electoral process, building on the success of the recent internal elections.
