TTCB pledges more support for U-19 girls

Trinidad and Tobago’s Under-19 women’s team returned from Antigua as unbeaten champions, and the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board has promised to improve the facilities available to them.

TTCB president Azim Bassarath made the pledge at a ceremony honoring the squad and its management staff at the board’s headquarters in Balmain, Couva. Led by series MVP Samara Ramnath, the team won the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Women’s Under-19 tournament for the first time since 2023.

We must not put women’s cricket on the back-burner.

Bassarath said the ground outside the National Cricket Centre would be developed for women’s cricket. “We must not put women’s cricket on the back-burner,” he said. The board plans to maintain the facility, move bleachers to the site, add a cover and build a structure for players and spectators before the team’s next tournament in 2027.

We must be able to match England, Australia, India and so on, so we are going to work with other territorial boards.

He said the board also wanted to work with other territorial boards so the region could compete with leading women’s cricket nations including England, Australia and India. Bassarath praised the team’s discipline and said Cricket West Indies officials, including former president Ricky Skerritt, had commended the players’ cricket and conduct.

He urged the Under-19 players to remain dignified and set an example for younger cricketers watching them.
