Tucheng Supporters Rally Behind Li Sichuan as Candidate Sings Campaign Song With Village Leaders

Heavy rain did not stop several hundred Tucheng residents from turning out for the launch of legislator Huang Yung-chang’s local support group for New Taipei mayoral candidate Li Sichuan. Supporters repeatedly shouted “freeze garlic,” a Taiwanese expression of support, as Li shook hands, posed for photographs and joined local village leaders in singing “Only by Striving Can You Win.”

Li said that if elected mayor, he would continue expanding the capacity of the Tucheng medical park and build a medical care center for older people. He said his goal was to create a one-stop system integrating medical services, long-term care and social welfare.

Li also renewed his senior welfare proposal. Of the 600 monthly points provided through the senior citizens’ card, 300 would be converted into EasyCard credit, allowing older residents to spend them at four major convenience-store chains, pharmacies and other outlets.

Huang described Li as steady and practical, saying he had gone to the front line whenever local difficulties arose and was often seen inspecting disaster sites. Li said his earlier work as director of the Taipei County Public Works Bureau, deputy county commissioner and deputy mayor of New Taipei had given him experience in promoting construction in Tucheng with Huang and other local representatives.
