Tui Macuata’s call for unity

In Labasa, Fiji, the Turaga Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, has issued a strong call for community solidarity in the fight against illegal drugs and escalating crime. Speaking at the iTaukei Night of the 2026 FMF Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival, he highlighted the critical role of unity and courage in deterring criminal activity.

Ratu Wiliame stated that criminals thrive in environments where communities remain silent and divided. Conversely, they falter when faced with united action and unwavering courage. His remarks come amid growing concerns over the increasing presence of hard drugs like methamphetamine and cocaine, which are now affecting urban, rural, and maritime areas across Fiji.

While acknowledging the government's establishment of a dedicated task force, the Tui Macuata stressed that the responsibility for crime prevention cannot solely rest with law enforcement agencies. He urged parents, educators, religious leaders, and youth groups to actively participate in safeguarding young people from harmful influences and preventing criminal behavior. The carnival, themed “Duavata for Everyone’s Safety and the Fight Against Drugs,” aims to foster this sense of shared responsibility and vigilance among all citizens.
