Tulum Treasurer Arrested at Cancun Airport on FGR Warrant

Tulum's municipal treasurer, Vicente Francisco Aldape Moncada, was arrested at Cancun International Airport by the National Guard on July 2, at 6:10 a.m. in Terminal 2. He is wanted by the Attorney General's Office (FGR) for unspecified reasons. The municipal government confirmed Aldape Moncada was armed when detained and that the FGR is leading the investigation.

It remains unclear if Aldape Moncada will be removed from his position. Before heading the treasury, he served as an advisor in the same department in 2022, when the current mayor, Diego Castañón, was the treasurer. This arrest is the latest in a series of detentions of Tulum officials.

Earlier, on June 10, the former director of Territorial and Urban Development, Lorenzo Bernabé, was arrested for domestic violence. Additionally, businessmen have accused Aldape Moncada of alleged extortion, forgery, altering permits, and issuing construction licenses, though these were not the grounds for his arrest. Mayor Castañón recently dismissed nine officials for corruption.
