Tunisia Advances Digital Transformation: 114 Projects Underway to Modernize Public Services

Tunisia is accelerating its digital transformation, with 114 projects currently in progress, many of which are over 90% complete, according to data presented at a ministerial council meeting.

These initiatives are set to significantly impact citizens' daily lives. Key upcoming services include the ability to remotely apply for residence certificates. The renewal of driver's licenses and national identity cards will also become progressively accessible online.

The government plans to expand remote passport renewal services, building on initial steps already taken. Digitalization efforts extend to civil status records, enabling electronic exchange between Tunisian consulates abroad and municipalities. A national registry for university diplomas is also being created to enhance the centralized digital management of academic credentials.

In the health sector, authorities are developing a national health identifier registry and enhancing the Evax vaccination system to cover all vaccine types. The IT system for health insurance and the Tunisian customs information system are also slated for modernization.

Digital payments are a major focus, with projects underway to develop electronic payment services for municipal taxes and the Tuneps e-Payment system. The government aims to generalize the use of e-wallets, particularly for underserved populations, and encourage their use in daily transactions like small purchases and parking fees. Telecommunications operators are being encouraged to increase investment in e-payment and Fintech solutions. The underlying infrastructure development includes expanding fiber optic networks and improving coverage in underserved areas.
