Tupac Shakur case: Why did it take 30 years to find the accused killer?

Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur was shot in Las Vegas, a Nevada jury found Duane Keffe D Davis guilty of first-degree murder on Aug. 31, 2026. The verdict left Davis awaiting sentencing, while online discussion turned to why authorities needed almost three decades to resolve the case.

The initial investigation struggled to secure useful testimony from eyewitnesses. Las Vegas police faced resistance soon after the shooting, even though one witness who had been near Shakur said they had seen the white Cadillac and could identify the attacker. Investigators could not turn that lead into immediate progress.

Authorities had long suspected members of the South Side Compton Crips, but prosecutors lacked a case strong enough to file formal charges. A 2002 Los Angeles Times investigation focused on the gang and examined the fight Shakur had with Orlando Anderson, Davis’s nephew, hours before the shooting.

The case gained new momentum after Davis began speaking publicly. In 2018, he said he had been inside the Cadillac during the shooting and identified Orlando Anderson as one of the attackers. Those comments renewed public interest, but legal problems limited their immediate use as admissible evidence in court.

Further interviews and Davis’s 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” gave investigators additional material to examine. The turning point came in 2023, when police executed a search warrant at Davis’s home. The case ultimately reached trial, producing the guilty verdict reported in the article.
