Chin Wai Kian, a 46-year-old durian farmer from Kampung Rengai, shared that only one tree in his orchard produced fruit this season. Despite the limited yield, every fallen durian was immediately reserved by dedicated fans. "Since last week, Tupai King has started to fall, and customers haven't stopped asking. Some pre-ordered because they know the yield is limited. Even though only one tree is bearing fruit, the demand is very high," Wai Kian told Utusan Malaysia. He explained that the Tupai King's appeal lies in its thick flesh, creamy texture, balanced sweet and bitter flavor profile, and potent aroma. These characteristics make consumers willing to pay a premium without hesitation. Wai Kian noted that many customers describe its taste as a blend of Musang King and Black Thorn, praising its soft texture and aroma. This unique combination justifies the RM120 per kilogram price for his first harvest of the season. Although the overall harvest was not abundant, the extraordinary demand led to many enthusiasts being disappointed as all the fruit was pre-ordered. Wai Kian is optimistic that the Tupai King trees will yield more fruit next season, ensuring continued high market demand, even at its 'billionaire' price point. The popularity of Tupai King is adding significant appeal to Malaysia's premium durian market, positioning Lipis as a notable destination for durian lovers.
