Turkey's Central Bank raises 2026 inflation forecast, impacting retiree pension expectations

Turkey's Central Bank (TCMB) has revised its inflation forecast upwards, projecting year-end inflation for 2026 to reach 28%, an increase from the previous 26% estimate. This adjustment significantly impacts the anticipated pension adjustments for millions of retirees in early 2027.

The TCMB's updated forecast directly influences the expected inflation difference that retirees, particularly those under the SSK and Bağ-Kur schemes, will receive. These retirees are entitled to a semi-annual inflation adjustment based on the preceding six-month period. Following a 17.76% inflation adjustment in the first half of 2026, the revised outlook for the July-December period now points to an inflation expectation of 8.70%.

If the year-end inflation target is met at 28%, the minimum pension, currently set at 23,552 Turkish Lira, could rise to between 25,600 and 25,700 Turkish Lira. However, the final amount for the minimum pension will also depend on legislative decisions by the Turkish Grand National Assembly. For civil servants and retirees under the Emekli Sandığı (4C) system, pension adjustments follow a different formula involving collective bargaining agreements and inflation differences that exceed agreed-upon thresholds.

The Central Bank's updated economic outlook signals a period of continued price pressure, requiring careful monitoring of inflation trends and their direct consequences on the purchasing power of pensioners across Turkey. The final figures for all retirees will be confirmed after the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) releases the official inflation data for December 2026.
