Turkey's Competition Authority Fines MediaMarkt 330 Million Lira for Cartel Practices

The Turkish Competition Authority (Rekabet Kurulu) has imposed a substantial administrative fine of over 330 million Turkish Lira on MediaMarkt Turkey Ticaret Limited Şirketi. This significant penalty stems from an investigation into alleged violations of competition law within the small home appliances sector. The authority concluded that MediaMarkt, through indirect information exchange facilitated by Fakir Elektrikli Ev Aletleri Dış Ticaret AŞ, engaged in practices that undermined fair market competition.

Specifically, the investigation focused on potential collusion between MediaMarkt, Teknosa İç ve Dış Tic. AŞ, and Vatan Bilgisayar San. ve Tic. AŞ. The Competition Authority determined that these companies, by sharing sensitive market information indirectly, had entered into an agreement or engaged in concerted practices that exhibited the characteristics of a 'hub-and-spoke' cartel. Such arrangements are illegal under Turkey's Competition Protection Law (Law No. 4054) as they restrict competition and harm consumers.
