Turkey's defense industry exports hit $11.2 billion, eyes $15 billion target

Turkey's defense industry is experiencing significant growth, with exports reaching $11.2 billion and showing a 40% increase compared to the previous year. The sector anticipates further expansion, potentially hitting $15 billion when defense-related service exports are included.

The industry is strategically shifting towards a new-generation model that emphasizes high-tech product development using national capabilities. This approach aims to foster industrialization across the country and bolster domestic expertise. With approximately 3,500 companies operating within the sector, the goal is to create a robust, interconnected ecosystem.

A recent milestone is the unveiling of Aselsan's infrared detector, placing Turkey among a select few nations, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Japan, and China, capable of developing and producing this advanced technology. This achievement is not merely about a single product; these detectors are vital components for unmanned aerial vehicles, armored forces, tanks, and missile defense systems.

Integrated into strategic platforms like the Altay main battle tank, Bayraktar Kızılelma unmanned combat aerial vehicle, and the Steel Dome air defense system, the infrared detector is expected to enhance operational capabilities. It promises to reduce dependence on weather conditions, improve night vision, and bolster target detection, thereby ensuring platforms remain operational on the battlefield for extended periods. Experience gained from conflicts in Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Iran has directly informed the development of these indigenous capabilities, addressing critical security requirements and enhancing operational effectiveness in diverse weather conditions.
