Turkish court sentences ex-partner to aggravated life imprisonment for murder

In a Turkish court, Olgun Gacar has been sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his former girlfriend, Fatma Kara. The incident occurred last year when Gacar met Kara in the Türkmen neighborhood, leading to a fatal argument.

During the dispute, Gacar repeatedly struck Kara's head against the ground, causing her death. Authorities were alerted by bystanders, and upon arrival, medical teams confirmed Kara had passed away. Gacar was subsequently arrested.

An indictment revealed that Gacar had a history of violence and threats against Kara, leading to two restraining orders being issued against him. The indictment also stated Gacar arrived at the scene armed with a rifle. It was further noted that Kara had been pregnant with Gacar's child and had an abortion 20 days before the murder.

In his defense, Gacar claimed he did not intend to kill Kara and acted in a moment of rage after his "manhood pride" was wounded by her words. However, investigators found inconsistencies in his statements. Camera footage showed Gacar dragging Kara by the neck for about 4 meters before repeatedly slamming her body to the ground. The court concluded that Kara had not attacked Gacar and that his defenses were an attempt to escape justice. The court ultimately ruled that Gacar committed "intentional killing of a woman" and denied any reduction for provocation, leading to the aggravated life sentence.
