Turkish holidaymaker dies after diving into shallow water from pier in Antalya

A 39-year-old holidaymaker died after jumping from a pier into shallow water at a hotel in Alanya, in Turkey’s Antalya province, despite signs warning that the action was dangerous and prohibited.

Arif Erman approached the protective ropes around the pier at a hotel in the Konaklı area at about 3 p.m. the previous day. He looked toward the sea, then ran over the pier’s protective barrier and dived into water reported to be about 50 centimetres deep.

A lifeguard at the pier also jumped into the water. Erman suffered severe injuries and died at a hospital after receiving initial treatment.

Security-camera footage showed Erman looking at the spot where he intended to jump, moving backward to create a running distance, and then running over the protective fence into the sea. Erman, a married father of three from Sapanca’s Akçay neighbourhood, is expected to be buried in Sapanca. An investigation is continuing.
