Tusk on U.S. base in Poland: Did not expect such a quick and positive reaction

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed his optimism and surprise at the rapid and favorable response from the United States regarding Poland's proposal to establish a permanent U.S. military base. Tusk stated that while he is an optimist, he did not anticipate such a swift and positive reaction to Poland's urgent preparations for hosting the base.

Speaking in Brussels, Tusk noted that the response from U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth was received with "great satisfaction." He clarified that this is not yet a final decision, but emphasized that Poland is making significant progress toward securing the base. Hegseth reportedly indicated that further details and arrangements are necessary.

Tusk highlighted that securing a permanent U.S. base would radically alter Poland's sense of security. He expressed hope that the subsequent steps would proceed quickly. The Prime Minister also credited the Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, for his significant engagement in the organizational process.

Currently, approximately 10,000 U.S. soldiers are stationed in Poland on a rotational and permanent basis. Key installations include the V Corps Forward Command at Camp Kościuszko in Poznań and a U.S. Army Garrison providing administrative and logistical support. Rotational forces often involve elements of the Armored Brigade Combat Team, operating from bases in western Poland. Additionally, a logistics and aviation support center is located in Powidz, and a U.S. Patriot missile defense system is situated in Redzikowo.
