Twelve people arrested over A66 crash that killed seven including two police officers

Twelve individuals have been arrested on suspicion of offenses related to organized crime as part of the investigation into a fatal crash on the A66 that claimed the lives of seven people, including two police officers. Cleveland Police reported that nine men and three women, aged between 19 and 61, were taken into custody.

The arrests are linked to a range of alleged offenses, from firearm possession to participation in organized crime group activities. The incident unfolded after police responded to reports of two cars being driven dangerously on Saturday, August 22.

One of the vehicles involved, a Volkswagen Passat, collided with the car carrying PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough. This Passat had been sought in connection with a Volvo XC60 that was observed ramming properties in the Middlesbrough area. Both vehicles were found to have cloned number plates but were identified by automated number plate recognition technology. The Volvo XC60 has since been traced and recovered in Middlesbrough.

Authorities confirmed that four of the five occupants in the Passat, including three teenagers, had prior convictions. Cleveland Police stated that, at present, there is no evidence to suggest that filming of the events for platforms like TikTok took place.
