Twin pandas Rui and Hui celebrate their last birthday in Korea before China transfer

Rui and Hui, the first twin pandas born in South Korea, celebrated their third birthday on July 7 at Everland theme park. The joyous occasion, however, is tinged with sadness as it is expected to be their last birthday celebrated in the country. International agreements stipulate that pandas must be transferred to China before their fourth birthday, making this a farewell celebration for the beloved twins.

Everland, operated by Samsung C&T Resort Division, hosted a special birthday party for Rui and Hui. The event brought together panda keepers, including Kang Chul-won and Song Young-kwan, along with pre-invited guests. The twins, younger sisters to the popular Fu Bao, were born on July 7, 2023.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, a large cake made of bamboo, a favorite treat for the pandas, was presented. Keeper Song Young-kwan also gifted the twins a wooden bench he personally crafted, allowing them to sit side-by-side. Around 30 fans, selected through a competitive online event, were present to share in the celebration.

The twins' third birthday is expected to be their last birthday in Korea, considering they must be moved to China before the age of 4 according to international agreements.
