Two arrested for death of police officer during football fan fight in Santa Fe regional league match

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the death of a 33-year-old police officer in Carcarañá, Santa Fe, Argentina. The officer, Eduardo Damián López, was serving with the local Radioelectric Command when he was severely beaten during a violent clash between fans following a regional league football match.

The match, between Atlético of Carcarañá and Sportivo Las Parejas, concluded with Sportivo Las Parejas being crowned champions of the Liga Cañadense de Fútbol. However, the celebrations were marred by a brutal confrontation between supporters. Officer López was reportedly struck by a rock, causing him to lose balance and fall onto a metal structure. The fall resulted in an iron bar piercing his skull, causing a severe, penetrating head trauma.

López was initially treated at a local health center before being transferred to the Dr. Clemente Álvarez Emergency Hospital in Rosario in critical condition. Despite intensive medical support, including mechanical ventilation and hemodynamic support, his condition remained highly unstable. Medical officials later confirmed his death, stating that the brain injuries were irreversible.

Authorities have arrested two 35-year-old men, identified as A. A. and J. C. Z., in connection with the incident. One suspect was apprehended in Carcarañá, while the other was located in the rural area of Correa. The investigation is ongoing, and police have not ruled out the possibility that other individuals were involved in the fatal assault. The prosecutor's office is reviewing surveillance footage and witness testimonies to determine further responsibilities.
