Two arrested in Greece for allegedly starting fires with generator and barbecue grill

Greek authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with separate fires that broke out on the islands of Skyros and in the Peloponnese region of Laconia. The arrests were made on Thursday by the investigative units of the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes.

On the island of Skyros, a 63-year-old woman was apprehended immediately after a fire started on the island. Officials attribute the blaze to an electrical generator she was using to power a basement space. A case file has been compiled against her.

Similarly, in Laconia, authorities arrested a 71-year-old man while he was allegedly using a barbecue grill on a plot of land. Fueled by strong winds, the fire quickly spread to dry grass and then to neighboring properties. Firefighting forces brought the blaze under control.

The 71-year-old man faces legal proceedings, and a fine of 3,600 euros was imposed on him. These incidents underscore the risks associated with improper use of equipment and open flames, especially during dry and windy conditions, which can rapidly escalate small incidents into significant wildfires.
