Two BNP Leaders Killed in Separate Attacks in Bangladesh

Two local leaders of Bangladesh's opposition party, BNP, were murdered in separate incidents overnight, prompting police to arrest suspects and launch investigations into the killings.

In Kishoreganj, Jahidul Alam, 52, a former president of the Mithamoin Upazila BNP whose party post had been suspended, was killed in an attack by unidentified assailants outside his home. A party activist accompanying him, Hadis Mia, was injured in the assault. Local sources and BNP leaders reported that the two were ambushed with sharp weapons while returning from a market. They were taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared Jahidul dead on arrival. Mithamoin Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monowar Hossain confirmed that one suspect was arrested immediately after the attack, and efforts are underway to apprehend the others. Jahidul had previously been suspended from his post over allegations of involvement in felling mahogany trees and had spent about a month in jail before being released on bail.

In Noakhali, Md Faruk, 55, also known as Shohid, was allegedly stabbed to death for protesting illegal drug trading and drug abuse in the area. Faruk, a former publicity secretary of the ward no. 6 BNP in Sundalpur Union and a businessman, was reportedly attacked while drinking tea at a stall. Locals apprehended two suspects, Md Arshad alias Akash, 24, and Md Sajjad Hossain Akash, 19, beating them before handing them over to the police. Kabirhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Romel Barua confirmed the incident.
