Two businessmen arrested at Sri Lankan airport with 64 illegally imported pigeons

Two Sri Lankan businessmen were apprehended at the Bandaranaike International Airport for the illegal importation of 64 foreign pigeons. Customs officials discovered the birds, housed in small cages, concealed within the suspects' luggage during a routine inspection.

The arrested individuals, both residents of the Wennappuwa area and reportedly owners of pet shops, are approximately 30 years old. They claimed to have purchased the pigeons in Italy, traveled to Dubai, and then proceeded to Colombo.

Authorities stated that the importation of these pigeons contravened provisions of Sri Lanka's Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance, as well as established animal quarantine regulations. The birds were found packed tightly into small iron cages, which were then hidden inside six suitcases belonging to the suspects.

This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by Sri Lankan authorities to curb illegal wildlife and animal trafficking. The successful interception of the pigeons underscores the vigilance of customs and wildlife protection officers at the country's entry points.
