Two dead in fire on oil product tanker near Jawol Island

A fire aboard a 7,000-ton oil product tanker at sea near Incheon's Jawol Island has claimed the lives of two crew members. The blaze erupted late on the 27th, and despite a large-scale response from the Incheon Coast Guard, two individuals were found deceased.

The victims, identified only by their ages as a man in his 60s and another in his 20s, were discovered in the vessel's engine room in cardiac arrest. They were transported to Jindu Port on Yeongheung Island, where they were pronounced dead. Of the 18 crew members on board, 11 were South Korean nationals and seven were foreign nationals.

The Coast Guard deployed 24 patrol boats and one aircraft to combat the fire and conduct rescue operations. The blaze was completely extinguished around 4 a.m. on the 28th. A Coast Guard official noted the difficulty in fighting the fire due to the nature of the cargo. Investigations into the precise cause of the fire, the sequence of events, and the full extent of the damage are now underway. The vessel will be towed and its cargo handled after consultation with the shipping company.
