Two firefighters die battling Crete wildfire

Two Greek firefighters have died while fighting a wildfire on the island of Crete, officials confirmed Wednesday. The blaze erupted in the Rethymno region, a popular tourist area, and remains out of control.

The firefighters were reportedly trapped by flames in their vehicle as they traveled from one burning sector to another. The Greek Fire Service spokesperson, Yiannis Artopios, confirmed the deaths, according to AFP and Reuters.

Authorities have deployed 110 firefighters, 27 vehicles, and four water-dropping aircraft to combat the fire. Six villages have been evacuated since the fire began. The cause of the blaze is still unknown.

Wind conditions are complicating firefighting efforts, with the mayor of Rethymno, Yiannis Tetarakis, noting the frequent changes in wind direction make aerial support difficult and increase the risk of firefighters being caught. "The wind is constantly changing direction, and it is very easy to get caught," he said.

This incident occurs amidst a summer of multiple wildfires across Greece. While Greece has largely avoided the extreme heat and devastating fires seen in other parts of Southern Europe, dry conditions and strong winds have created favorable conditions for fires to spread. Similar fires have also been reported on the islands of Paros and Lesbos, leading to evacuations.
