Two injured as train derails in southeast England

A commuter train traveling from London derailed near the town of Lewes in southeast England on Thursday, resulting in injuries to 11 passengers. The incident occurred shortly before 4:00 pm as the train, operated by Southern Rail, was en route from London Victoria station.

Emergency services reported that two passengers sustained serious injuries, while an additional nine suffered less serious harm. The South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed the casualty figures in a statement. Approximately 150 passengers were on board the train at the time of the derailment. British Transport Police declared a "major incident" but confirmed that all passengers had been safely evacuated from the scene.

At this stage, we can confirm that two patients have sustained serious injuries and a further nine patients have sustained less serious injuries.

Footage from the site in East Sussex showed at least three carriages overturned. Paramedics were present, and the area was secured by emergency personnel. The cause of the derailment remains unknown and is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities. Train accidents, especially those involving fatalities, are relatively rare in Britain.

This incident follows a recent train collision north of London in June, which killed a train driver and injured dozens. Last November, four people sustained minor injuries in a derailment in remote northwestern England attributed to a reported landslide. The investigation into the Lewes derailment is expected to determine the factors contributing to the accident.
