Two Injured in Cyprus Gas Station Fire After Man Tries to Light Cigarette

A dangerous incident at a gas station in Cyprus's Larnaca province has left two men hospitalized with burns. The fire reportedly broke out just before midnight when a 38-year-old man attempted to light a cigarette while his vehicle was being fueled.

According to police reports, the 32-year-old driver was at the station when the 38-year-old approached him, cigarette in mouth. The older man then tried to light the cigarette with a lighter, causing an immediate ignition and fire. Bystanders were able to extinguish the flames before they spread further.

Both individuals required medical attention. The 32-year-old was treated for minor burns and released. However, the 38-year-old sustained second and third-degree burns, primarily to his lower extremities, and remains hospitalized. The incident is being investigated by local police as a case of negligent and reckless actions.

Authorities are examining the circumstances that led to the fire, emphasizing the risks associated with smoking near flammable materials. The investigation aims to determine the full extent of the negligence involved in the incident.
