Two Kwara Assembly members defect from APC ahead of 2027 elections

The Kwara State House of Assembly is experiencing a significant political shift as two serving members, Hon. Olushola Odetundun and Hon. Saba Yisa Gideon, have officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move deepens the wave of defections from the ruling party, occurring in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Hon. Odetundun, representing Irepodun Constituency, announced his resignation in a letter to the APC Chairman of Ajasse Ward II. He stated that his decision was the result of extensive consultations with political stakeholders, supporters, associates, and constituents, alongside reflections on recent political developments within the state. Odetundun emphasized that his political realignment would not compromise his commitment to effective representation, grassroots development, or the welfare of his constituents.

Similarly, Hon. Gideon, who represents Edu State Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Livestock, submitted his resignation letter on August 19 to the party chairman in Tsaragi Ward 3, Edu Local Government Area. Gideon cited concerns regarding internal democracy, fairness, and inclusiveness within the APC as the basis for his decision, which also followed consultations with constituents and key stakeholders.

The departure of these two lawmakers contributes to a broader pattern of political realignment in Kwara State. This trend was notably highlighted by the earlier resignation of Senator Saliu Mustapha, who now represents the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Kwara Central senatorial district. His exit has been followed by numerous other APC members and political stakeholders across the state. The recent resignations occurred just a day after a major political event in Ilorin, where defectors from various political tendencies were presented as grassroots canvassers for the upcoming 2027 elections.

Neither Odetundun nor Gideon has publicly disclosed their next political affiliation in their resignation letters, leaving their future political destinations uncertain.
