Two Major Road Projects in Macedonia Move to Next Stage as Preferred Bidders Named

Two major road projects in Central and Eastern Macedonia are moving forward after provisional contractors emerged from the tender process. The projects cover the upgrade of the Thessaloniki-Edessa road and construction of the Drama-Amphipoli vertical axis, through Palaiochori.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas approved the evaluation records for the financial offers in the second phase of the international tenders. The competitions are being conducted under the competitive dialogue procedure.

The Thessaloniki-Edessa project includes the Mavrovouni-Edessa section, the bypass of Giannitsa, the Giannitsa and Paralimni interchanges, and the bypass of Chalkidona, including the Chalkidona and Eleousa interchanges and a new alignment. It also includes operation and maintenance of the main road from the Axios River Bridge to Edessa, covering about 52 kilometers.

The implementation of these two projects is highly important for Central and Eastern Macedonia, specifically for Thessaloniki, Pella and Drama.

The second project covers the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of the Palaiochori-Mavrolefki section, 29.5 kilometers long, and the Mavrolefki-Drama section, 13.5 kilometers long. It also includes nine grade-separated interchanges and operation and maintenance of the main Drama-Amphipoli route, which extends for 43 kilometers.
