Two Men Detained in Croatia on Serious Domestic Violence Charges

Croatian authorities have detained two men on suspicion of serious domestic violence and abuse, with one facing charges that include offenses against sexual freedom.

The first suspect, a 62-year-old man, is under investigation for alleged criminal acts against sexual freedom and domestic violence against a close relative between December 2025 and May 2026 in the Karlovac region. Following questioning, he was placed in one month of investigative detention due to the risk of re-offending and influencing witnesses.

The second detainee, a 37-year-old man, is suspected by the Varaždin County State Attorney's Office of attempted aggravated murder, causing minor injuries, domestic violence, death threats, and the psychological and physical abuse of four children aged two, seven, nine, and ten.

He is accused of attacking a 62-year-old family member in July 2026, allegedly strangling her by putting his hands around her neck until she lost consciousness. The suspect is also accused of violent behavior towards a 39-year-old family member from March 2016 to July 2026, including physical assault and death threats. This abuse reportedly occurred in the presence of the children, who were allegedly subjected to psychological and physical mistreatment. He has also been placed in investigative detention due to the risk of re-offending and influencing witnesses.
