Two new health facilities open in North East Gonja to boost maternal care

Two new Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds have officially opened in the Kanakulai and Tantuani communities within the North East Gonja District of Ghana's Savannah Region. These facilities are designed to significantly improve maternal and child healthcare delivery and provide easier access to essential medical services for local residents.

Funded by the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and the Member of Parliament's Common Fund, the modern CHPS compounds are expected to alleviate the burden on pregnant women, children, and the elderly. Previously, they had to travel long distances to seek medical attention in Salaga, Tamale, and other nearby communities. The new facilities are equipped with motorbikes to support outreach services and vaccination campaigns.

A key feature of these new compounds is the inclusion of accommodation for health personnel. This initiative aims to address the challenges faced by nurses who previously commuted from distant towns, enabling them to reside within the communities and provide more prompt and consistent healthcare. Over 11 health workers are anticipated to benefit from these housing facilities.

Alhaji Alhassan Mumuni, the Member of Parliament for Salaga North, stated at the opening ceremony that the CHPS compounds align with the government's efforts to expand access to quality healthcare through the Free Primary Healthcare Programme. He emphasized that the facilities would ensure expectant mothers receive safe delivery services closer to home, reinforcing the commitment to accessible primary healthcare for all. The MP and the District Chief Executive also commissioned nine other development projects across the district, including educational facilities and sanitation infrastructure.
