Two police officers injured in Peshawar IED blast

Two police officers suffered minor injuries in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast on Sunday afternoon near the Pir Zakorhi Bridge, a key eastern entry point to Peshawar. The explosion occurred close to the Peshawar-Islamabad motorway toll plaza, also causing damage to the police vehicle.

City police spokesperson Alam Khan confirmed that the injured officers, including the van's driver and a constable, were promptly taken to the hospital. A bomb disposal unit arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported to manage the aftermath.

This blast comes just days after a significant terrorist attack in Hangu district, where nine police officers, including a deputy superintendent, were killed and 28 others were wounded. Earlier, on July 29, a policeman and four village defense committee members lost their lives during a security operation in the Swat region, which also resulted in the deaths of six terrorists.

Recent data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) indicates a worrying trend. July saw at least 112 security personnel killed in terrorist attacks nationwide, marking the highest monthly toll since January 2023 and the second-highest in over a decade. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, excluding its merged districts, the number of deaths rose sharply to 154 in July, a 105% increase from June's 75. The number of injured also climbed from 60 to 98. Specifically within mainland KP, security personnel deaths surged from 12 to 38, while terrorist fatalities increased by 192%, from 37 to 108.
