Two police officers killed during operation to free two kidnap victims in Mexico

Two federal agents were killed and another wounded in an armed attack during an operation in Omealca, Veracruz, Mexico’s Security and Citizen Protection Secretary Omar García Harfuch said. Despite the attack, authorities rescued two kidnapping victims.

García Harfuch said federal agents came under fire from organized crime members while conducting an investigation. He said the wounded agent was receiving medical care and had the government’s full support, while expressing solidarity with the families, colleagues and loved ones of the two dead officers.

He said authorities immediately launched an operation to locate and arrest those responsible, with support from the Defense Ministry, Navy, National Guard, Veracruz’s security authorities and state prosecutor’s office, as well as authorities in Oaxaca. “This crime will not go unpunished. Those responsible will be brought to justice,” he said.

The security chief added that the deployment continued on Friday despite the deaths of the two agents. Cooperation among several agencies led to the release of both kidnapping victims, whom he said were safe and unharmed.

According to the organization Alto al Secuestro, Veracruz ranks third nationally for kidnapping victims during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, which began on Oct. 1, 2024, with 217 victims recorded.
