Two Rescued After Three Days Trapped by Floodwaters in Taiwan's Hualien County

Two people who became trapped by rising floodwaters in Taiwan's Hualien County have been successfully rescued after a perilous three-day ordeal. The individuals were stranded in the Muku Stream, near the Longjian Power Plant in Xiulin Township, following heavy rainfall on August 24th.

Rescue operations, led by the Hualien County Fire Bureau, faced significant challenges due to the steep terrain and the extremely turbulent currents of the stream. Rescuers attempted multiple rope descents into the gorge, but the increasing rainfall and water levels initially prevented them from reaching the stranded individuals. During one attempt to establish a crossing, a rescuer was nearly swept away by the powerful current but was secured by safety ropes.

To sustain the trapped individuals and maintain communication, rescuers utilized a drone to deliver essential supplies, including warm clothing, food, and a radio. This allowed them to confirm the pair were safe and had shelter while awaiting rescue. On the third day, as the water levels slightly subsided, rescuers were able to establish a rope bridge across the stream, finally reaching and safely escorting the two individuals to safety.
