Two Taichung Districts Lose NT$850 Million to Scams in Just Seven Months, Lawmaker Calls for Joint Anti-Fraud Effort

Fraud losses in Taichung reached hundreds of millions of New Taiwan dollars in several districts during the first seven months of the year, prompting a city councilor to demand a coordinated response across government departments.

Democratic Progressive Party Councilor Ho Wen-hai said figures he obtained showed that every neighborhood in Nantun District had recorded fraud between January and July. Daye Neighborhood suffered the largest loss, at NT$40.16 million, while Baoshan Neighborhood recorded NT$2.72 million. Fengle and Chunshe neighborhoods reported losses of NT$29.3 million and NT$28.41 million respectively, while four others exceeded NT$10 million.

Ho said the wider city faced a similar pattern. Of Taichung’s 29 districts, only six recorded fewer than 100 fraud cases during the seven-month period. Beitun and Xitun each exceeded 1,000 cases, while the other districts recorded hundreds. Thirteen districts suffered financial losses of more than NT$100 million. Beitun posted the highest loss, at more than NT$496 million, followed by Xitun at over NT$360 million. Beiqu and Fengyuan each exceeded NT$330 million.

Ho urged police to go beyond investigations and step up public education, while working with other city departments to reduce both the number of victims and the financial damage. Police Chief Wu Ching-tien said Taichung’s case numbers and losses had already dropped significantly compared with last year, but added that combating fraud required joint efforts by national and local authorities.
