Tainan police protect children on first day of school, hand out stationery and safety advice

Rain fell in Tainan on the first morning of the new school term, but police officers and volunteers were stationed outside schools to help children arrive safely.

Huang Hsiao-ning, head of Tainan’s Women and Children’s Police Unit, led officers to Yongkang Elementary School, where they managed traffic at the entrance and used games and stationery gifts to discuss child protection, anti-drug awareness, fraud prevention and road safety.

The Yongkang Precinct arranged child-protection duties during the morning rush at 11 elementary schools. Officers worked with school crossing volunteers and teachers in the rain, helping students cross roads and speaking with parents during drop-off.

At the school gates, officers also used banners and signs promoting zero tolerance for violence, women’s and children’s safety, and crime prevention. The police said the aim was to make safety awareness part of everyday life.

Because first-grade students may feel nervous in an unfamiliar school environment, the precinct gave practical stationery sets to children at Daqiao Elementary School. The gifts turned the new students’ initial unease into smiles, the report said.

Huang advised children to follow five precautions: avoid excessive internet use that disrupts daily routines, do not reveal personal information, do not send nude videos or photographs, do not meet strangers alone, and do not drink beverages prepared in advance by others. Parents and children can also watch safety videos on the National Police Agency’s NPA Care U YouTube platform.
